Sweetie if she's from the south you have to options pearl's or pearls. Debutante's are a link to the past. So I'd give pearl's.

Something symbolic... How about a butterfly pendant. Symbolizing her change from a little girl into womanhood. Showing her that she has grown into a beautiful person and she is now starting her life and ready to fly.
