Most tortoises like fresh veggies, but this gives them diarrhea. They aren't designed to have that much moisture in their diet. Normally, they would eat dry grasses, which provides more fiber. I clip some grass from my yard and let it dry a few days and mix it (50/50) with dark leafy greens and sometimes a bit of carrot, sweet potato, squash, or other hard veggies. They like dandelion greens, too. Most have a problem digesting sugars, so fruit should be a very small part of their diet. Apples are the best to give them. The website already suggested for Austin's turtle page is a good one. Look up the caresheet for your specific kind of tortoise to see what it should be eating.

Research the turtle before getting it! But since you didnt do that, I would strongly suggest you go to www.chelonia.org. It is a great site and should have a care sheet for your species. Note that care in species varies so be sure to find your specific species. As for the others saying lettuce, it MUST be Romaine lettuce not Iceburg lettuce. Seriously go to the website and go to other websites with caresheets. It takes responsibility to take care of a tortoise.

Collard greens, turnip greens, a TINY bit of spinach once a month, a tiny bit of carrots, some romain lettuce because they DO like it, a tiny bit of fruit once a month, baby lettuce, etc.

Make sure that if your tort comes from a 'grassy' area as most do, you feed it grass and some timothy hay. I let my russian tort girls eat timothy hay every day. It keeps their poop from becoming too runny. Dont be alarmed if there is a tiny bit of blood in the poop the first two or three times. However, if there is blood for a long period of time(five days) then you have to get them to the vet.

You should keep them on a mixture of sand/garden loam or crushed walnut shells. Mine are on the walnut(for being inside in winter, its easier to clean) and they are doing good.

What type of tort is he? Russian, star, sulcata?

All depends on what kind of turtle you have bud. They are not all the same. I suggest you do some research. Start with fruits and vegetables, maybe some meal worms. I would avoid lettuce though. Not much nutrition there.

go to www.austinsturtlepage.com for help.

I am generalizing but I would suggest: lettuce, carrots, spinach, apples (sliced), grapes, celery, potato (occasionally). You can also but pellets as the pet store.
