Who has discovered planets?
Previously, the only official planet discoverers were William Herschel (one planet: Uranus), Le Verrier/Adams (one planet: Neptune), and Tombaugh (one planet: Pluto).
Now the club is much much larger (some planets were discovered by teams which change a bit, in general the team name or the team leader is listed. Sometimes no discoverer is recorded):
* Brown et al.: 15 planets
* Deep Ecliptic Survey: 8 planets
* Near Earth Asteroid Tracking Survey: 4 planets
* Spacewatch: 4 planets
* Jewitt et al.: 3 planets
* Rupenstein, Ferrin, Danzl, Roe, Luu: 1 each

Well there are TWO planet name-types now, planet and dwarf planet, 8 planets, and, barring further "settling" of discovery, an unknown number of dwarves, of which Pluto is one such. Ceres is the closest and the only one in the Asteroid Belt, Eris is one and set this business off, no, Dysnomia is Eris's moon, not a planet itself. Charon is so large compared to Pluto that some astronomers (but not enough to make it official) consider it a dwarf planet also. My own acronym for the dwarves is Certain Extra Planets (Can {optional}) Make Havoc; Quite Swiftly. Ceres, Eris Pluto (Charon {easily inserted, easily removed}) MakeMake Haumae; Quoar Sedna (these two are only candidates). addition of others means this rhyme may never be completed. There is 8 planets currently;however, I believe that the group that decided that also decided that the 9(that includes Pluto) would be called the "classical planets" or something to the extent of that name.

if you grew up believing Pluto was a planet you should continue that belief. 8 without Pluto
The nine planets that orbit the sun are (in order from the sun): Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto (a dwarf planet).
