I was not a Shula fan, but I think that they should have gave him one more year on the HOT SEAT. That would have gave Rodriguez and Spurrier more time to think. Saban left LSU and Miami for more money. He brought more controversy to Bama. They don't need that right now. I hope that Saban doesn't put Bama in another bad position. On the other hand, I don't think that anyone will offer more $$$ than Bama did.

With all the interference the boosters inject into the Alabama program, I think Saban will find that he has bought into a bad situation. When the alumni have too much input into your program you're gonna suck.

Alabama has made the head coaching job one of the most ridiculous in years. Every coach that comes through there that isn't the incarnation of Bear Bryant is screwed from the word go.

They didn't even give Shula the good 4 to 5 years that it requires most coaches to get their system intact. And considering the state that Alabama football was in when he got there, they should've gave him about 7 years. He took them a bowl game 3 out of 4 years (we're counting the Independence Bowl because even though he was fired before the game, he got them there) with probably one of the most dismal personnel situations in the nation. He also had ridiculous amounts of off-field issues and the program was in the worst shape it's ever been when he came in.

I think Alabama fans/alumni/boosters are hoping for another Paul "Bear" Bryant. Wake up, it's not happening.

Alabama didn't have a shot in the dark at getting Rich Rodriguez from West Virginia. Why on earth would he leave a school that won't pressure him to win every game on the schedule and he's sitting on two potential Heisman Candidates? And Spurrier is just happy being at South Carolina and being in the SEC. No one WANTS to go to Alabama and deal with losing their job if they don't win the National Championship. The only reason Saban came back was because he wanted to be back in the SEC and away from the Dolphins.

I think Alabama ends up disappointed again after a few good woodshed beatings by teams like Florida, Arkansas and Auburn. And next thing you know Saban will be just another good ol' boy in the "I've been fired by Alabama" Club.

Alabama is expecting a miracle worker. They are extremely impatient and the program has been in turmoil for years. Saban walked into a good position at LSU. He is walking into a mess at alabama. Lets see if he can pull that program together and do it fast enough to satisfy the booster. Those boosters by the way, are probably expecting a championship of some type next year. After all they are paying 4 Million a year to try and buy one. Yes, I totally agree Shula should have gotten another year. Saban is a proven college coach, but in this whole situation, I would say he is overrated.

Nick Saban is definately overrated. Winning the championship does not make you a NFL caliber coach. Nick Saban should have stayed at LSU. Mike Shula was a poor choice to be a first time coach of a big time college football program. He only gotten the job because he's an Alabama alum and he's Don Shula's son. Slyvester Croom would had been the better choice for coach but things are not looking good for him at MS State. I used to live in AL and I think the problem is that the program hadn't been able to find anyone capable enough to fill Bear Bryant's shoes. About the only one who had succeeded was Gene Stallings and that only because he was a protege of Bryant.

Nick Saban despite his past track record, is a great college head coach. He's done very well everywhere he has gone. Alabama in one of the next three years will have a great season. The problem is they will have to replace Saban after a bowl game because he'll get another offer he can't refuse.
But Alabama has been no stranger to interviewing coaching candidates over the last decade, so I think they know what they are getting and what to expect.

I think you will be suprised at how well Saban will do as the Coach. He had alot to work with at LSU and won the NC in 2003, but he is a helluva coach. This guy has been coaching in college and the pros for several years either as an assistant or a headcoach. He has a good record and he will get the job done, but it may take a couple of years before you see the fruits of his labor.

I think Shula deserved one more year.

BTW I am an Auburn fan.

i also think Shula should have been given one more year.

but i think Saban is a real coach who will restore things to where they should be at Alabama. they won't win the national championship next year, but they will improve on the 6-7 record of last year. they will begin to compete for the SEC championship on a regular basis. the "cupboard is not bare" at Alabama, and he will do a good job with what is there, and in a few years we will see what he does with his own recruits.

THAT will be the true test, not what we may write on Yahoo! Answers.

Regardless of what the others said, Saban is not overrated. He doesn't make a good NFL head coach, and I didn't think he would. But I think he will make Alabama a winner again. Alabama will - and did have this year - have a good recruiting base if you have the right guy coaching the team. Within the next five years, Alabama will be holding the BCS trophy.

Saban is way overrated. Right now, it's just a huge mess at Alabama, and a coach who had one good college season and a bad NFL career won't fix it. Saban is just doing stuff for more money.

ITS NOT SABAN, BUT ALABAMA IN GENERAL THAT IS OVERRATED. BAMA FANS, HAS IT EVER OCCURRED TO YOU THAT WHILE YOU WERE ON PROBATION, THE REST OF THE SEC LOADED UP? STEVE SPURIER, HAS GOT HIS PLAYERS AT S.C. NOW, FLORIDA IS LOADED(AS USUAL), TENNESSEE IS THE WINNINGEST TEAM IN THE LAST 15 YEARS AND THE ONLY RIVAL THAT YOU'VE BEAT IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS(ONCE),GEORGIA HAS RELOADED, LSU IS LOADED, ARKANSAS HAS A TEAM AGAIN, AUBURN OWNS YOU, AND KENTUCKY HAS EVEN MATCHED YOUR TALENT(ON OFFENSE). SO YOU SHOULD HAVE KEPT SHULA AND SPENT SOME MONEY ON WHATEVER DRUGS IT IS YOUR USING THAT MAKE YOU THINK YOUR TEAM CAN COMPETE FOR A NATIONAL TITLE IN THE NEXT TEN YEARS.
