The problem always occurs when I am slowing down or stopping. The electrical power of the car remains working when the problem occurs. I have never had any trouble restarting the car after it happens. Right before it happens, my RPM meter dwindles down to zero and my heater starts blowing less air. If I notice that it is going to happen, I can give it more gas and it will remain running. I drive the car every day, but it only happens a few days a week. When it does happen, it usually happens more than once in one trip. I have always had the car above 55mph at some point before it happens. I tried dry gas but it didn't seem to work. My check engine light did come on for two days, but went back off on its own, don't know if it was related to this problem. Any ideas of what might be wrong will be helpful.

Next time you drive your car and it starts to act up, put the transmission in neutral. If the car stays running, you have a torque converter clutch taking a dump and need to have it replaced. If it continues to die, you may have an EGR issue but my bet is more on the TCC messing up.

A likely possibility to check out for this problem is the EGR valve. This valve will be open during part throttle cruise, but when it gets stuck it will stay open even during decel and will cause an air leak that will stall the vehicle. It is common for these valves to stick with carbon build up or when a small piece of carbon gets stuck since they take exhaust gas and recirculate it to the combustion chamber to lower combustion chamber temperature and therefore nox emissions. Sometimes removing and cleaning the valve will help, but if not a new one is the solution. Again, this is a likely cause, but I cannot say it is the cause. The same thing can occur if the IAC motor stays open from carbon buildup. Even though it is used for idle control, it does move to follow the throttle plate at all speeds. If it gets stuck open, it will also cause an air leak that can stall the vehicle. This intermittent problem is something you will probably want a professional repair facility to evaluate.

a 97 model is an obd2 model, which means the computer/sensor system is very comprehensive. if you have even a suggestion of an egr valve problem, you WILL HAVE a check engine light on, with any number of related dtc's. if you dont have a chk eng mil on, then most likely an egr isnt the problem. i would remove, inspect and clean the iac, and the throttle body. these get gummed up with trash and carbon over use, and will cause the exact symptoms you describe. fairly easy to do yourself, and can save you $100 or more, at a shop.

Could be as simple as a blocked air filter, or a need of resetting your idle.

Best get a Shop to examine it for such things

your tourque converter actuater may need attention. when you slow down almost to a stop and the mill stops, indicates that it may not fully kicking out. It will kick in at 40MpH and out around 38MPH or so.
