You can use Apple iPods on PCs if they meet the system requirements (Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 or later or Windows XP, 500 MHz Pentium class processor or better, 256MB RAM, USB 2.0). If your Dell is really old, you might not have USB 2.0. Some people have gotten iPods to work with USB 1.0 or 1.1, but it's REALLY slow to sync and update your iPod, and it is not guaranteed to work.
Assuming you meet the system requirements, it's very easy to use. Basically, you just install iTunes and connect the iPod to your computer. Everything is automatic.
If you are buying a used iPod, the very old ones (with four physical buttons around the wheel, instead of above the wheel or on the wheel) require FireWire instead of USB 2.0.

iPods can be used on Macs or PCs. I think you need Windows 2000 or XP so as long as your Dell Laptop has that, and a spare USB port, then that is all you will need.

You can use it with a MAC or a PC. I use my nano with my PC, having downloaded iTunes from online, free from apple.com.
Apple decided to make their product accessible to all users, MAC, or PC. Which was a smart move.

You can download songs off of itunes on a dell computer, but it helps if it's a newer version. It also helps to have a fast internet connection.

-it is pc and mac compatible
-it's pretty easy
-I wouldn't use it on a computer too old, though...it'll take a long time to download and may use up a lot of space.
