He could have gone to wiki himself. A router is the thing that networks all the computers in your home or office. It *routs* the signal to other places. A router can give you wireless internet.

It takes ur commincations from ur computer and routes it to the next router closest to the location of where ur initial communication needs to go the quickest way. They are in buildings with no windows all over the world.

So it lets you network computers, share internet connection, and does inbound packet filtering (acts as firewall).

Many today also have WiFi (wireless LAN) capability.
