That man was in fact a woman of questionable gender. The stair was an escalator and the apparition was a metaphysical door sponge. Which of course although you can say its a sponge was a door and needed to have a key. The Key was some sort of secret which could only be understood if one went in the right direction.

Mrs B looks down and sees the strange woman in the bunches below and says ' OK Clean the windows, It's £2.50 and hour and all the chillies you can eat' Then walks off whistling.
