German was a little difficult for me to learn, but when I got back from living in Austria, I started teaching Polish refugees to speak English. Oh, my gosh, we have so many exceptions to the rules it isnt even funny. Just take the whole 'ough' thing. I believe there are 9 different ways to pronounce that. I found myself apologizing over and over to these poor people for all the exceptions to our rules. I think English has to be one of the harder languages to learn. At least we only have one form of address and all of our articles are neuter. Good Luck.

English and German are very similar languages. If you are having a very hard time learning German, your language aptitude is low.
It is easier for an English speaker to learn German, than it is for German speaker to learn English. This is because rules of grammar and conjugation in German are very cut and dry with few exceptions, while in English, they are wide and varied.
Many are under a false pretense that it is easy for Germans to learn English because so many of them speak it. This is because English is a required subject at their eqivalent of the middle school level. Here in America, a middle school student can elect to take German (or another language) but is not required to.
I hope this is helpful :-)

If all English were taught German from a very young age like the Germans are taught English, I think the scale would be evenly balanced.

I speak fluent German and I don't think its any harder than Germans learning English, I just think that most people living in Germany begin learning English at an earlier age. Also, when you go to Germany, and they realise that you're English, they like to practise their English on you. Which, is usualyy easier because no matter how much I learn they always seem to be better at my language than I am at theirs.

i defenitely think it is more difficult to learn german, i have a german friend who is a foreign exchange student and she said they learn english there when they are in middle school its like a second language for them. The majority of them know english , as for us we really only know english and when we do learn a new language we learn at an older age which is hard to learn when comparing to learning at a young age.

English is supposedly the hardest language to learn, so I'd guess it is more difficult for Germans.
German is not that difficult to learn though. It is similiar to English, Polish, and Russian...where French and Italian come more from Latin.

Well I'm English (actually American, but still...) and I'm taking German in school. It is pretty hard! They probably think our language is complicated too.
