I think its the fear of the unknown.

a good example.... if you tie up a person, gag, blindfold ad plug he's ears and leave him alone for a while, with no way of communicating or figuring out whats to come... he'll break! ( ad most probably loose his mind)

Don't ask me how i know this but some research has been done and its sort of a fact. the human senses are designed to judge the immediate surrounding and anticipate whats to come.... take that away and you leave him helpless.

so i guess humans greatest fear could be helplessness!

I'd have to say that the greatest fear of any human, if you boil it down to the most base, instinctual level, would have to be not having control of their life.
If you fear the unknown, it's because you don't know what will happen, and you may not be able to control events.
If you fear death, then that is fear of the unknown, which brings you back to not being in control.
Though most of us never stop to think about our fears on such a level, I feel that a lack of control is at the root of most, if not all, of them.

I think the greatest fear is summoning the courage to take full responsibility for our lives. It's too common to blame our emotional states, and well-being on circumstances and events that happen to us. We tend to want to change everything around us instead of demanding a change in ourselves. We're profoundly afraid to get out of our "comfort-zones" to face imagined entities that seem to be waiting to pounce on us the second we step out. It's kind of funny that our greatest fears don't even actually exist.
