The British prefer to belong to the British, but as a matter of geography, they are closer to the continent of Europe than to the United States. I don't think that Britain is going to become part of the US. Additionally they have proven to be more successful at catching terrorists than we are, so they don't really need help from the United States.
Maybe you should be asking whether the United States wants to be part of Britain?

If Britain doesn't decide then it will be left alone and isolated. I'd prefer Europe. Our history is mixed with Europes', we've had Romans, Vikings, Saxons and Normans make up our country for a starter. We created an empire just like other European powers, but they prefered independance from their masters, they are free from European rule so we should not delude ourselves that are former colonies owe us any thing.
More importantly Europe is made up of former great powers like France and Germany, on their own they have no power over the USA, but together and united they are the only thing left (except from terrorist muslims) that can keep a check on the rogue superpower.

We`d prefer to belong to ourselves and to govern ourselves without stupid laws given us by Brussels ,and despite Blair being Bush`s poodle right now we`ll never belong to America.

The European Union. It has a culture to be proud of and a number of intelligent leaders. Can you imagine George W. Bush as a European leader ? We'd be at war with Russia by now as they have plenty of oil.

Those of you who answered in favor of the EU have clearly never opened a history book. But if you think France and Germany are better ally's to have than the USA, then go for it. I wish you luck.

And when it all blows up in your faces, America will still be there to help you.
