The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.

There was a reason people burned this book back in the day. It grabs hold of your heart in a terrible way, in a wonderful way that only powerfully written pieces can do. Arguments presented in it can make even fundamentalist Christians doubtful, if only for a moment, but at the same time, the characters presenting said arguments are so revolting and despicable it's a wonder we don't hate them more. Dorian's mistakes, his doubt, his yearning for self-preservation and the consequences of these things can all be used as models for how to NOT live one's life.

You can choose from lots of metaphysical books, all free. It's not pro or contra any religion and the books teach you how to work on yourself. Give it a try.

"Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand
"1984" and "Animal Farm" by George Orwell
"Make Room! Make Room!" by Henry Harrison, which was the basis for the movie "Soylent Green", although the plot and theme was changed for the movie, you'd probably want to watch this movie in addition to your reading. Enjoy!

I LOVE the V.C. Andrews books. There are several series and a ghostwriter is still publishing her books. I haven't finished them all yet but I'm destined to read all of them.
