Stalin was able to stay in power because whenever someone was gaining popularity or he felt paranoia about a potential rival he had the ability to find evidence or made up trump charges and the person was eliminated . Through his paranoia and evil he eliminated several of his best generals through the military purges of the 1930's which is why he stayed in power , wigned a nonaggression pact with Germany but with Operation Barbarossa he nearly lost it all.He was saved by all people the Japanese who bombed Pearl Harbor and the Germans were within 15 miles from Moscow. With the Americans involved in WW2 we saved Stalin by Lend-Lease. After the war the Soviet Union took over Eastern Europe and we were struggling with keeping Western Europe under our influence. With Communist China in 1949, stalin was able to achieve another ally that we were preoccupied with especially with Korea and Indochina. It was only through a stroke that Stalin would relinquish power.

Like Hitler, Stalin was paranoid, and he had thousands of army officers and others slaughtered when he first came to power to insure he was surrounding himself with loyal people, loyal to him. Then he had the KGB which was the secret service spy organization keep tabs of people, and he "eliminated" those who were a threat to his power. In other words, he acted as most dictators do.
