One technique is to use logarithms.

log x = l000(log5) = 698.97. The whole number 698 is the power of 10 and 10^.97 = 9.33. The complete answer would be 9.33 x 10^698 or 9.33 time 10 to the 698 power.

hope this helps.
Check out the definition of logs in your math book. They are often quite handy. ;>)

This is a pretty big number, around 9.33x10^698 (much too large for most scientific calculators). My TI-89 can only calculate this number to twelve of the required 698 digits, but I was able to achieve best precision under PowerToy Calc set to extreme precision (512 digits (25 per line below)):

5^1000 = 9.

People are being too simple here.
If you ask your calculator for 5^1000 you will almost certainly get an error message because most calculators can only cope with numbers upto 1e100 ( 1 followed by 100 zeros ) and 5^1000 is much bigger than that. You need to find a calculator or a calculator program that can cope with numbers 700 digits long.

To calculate "5 to the power of 1000" on the calculator in Windows, you first need to make sure that it is set to "Scientific" (in the "View" drop-down menu). Then put in the 5, click the X^Y button, then put in 1000, then click =

with my calculator I found 9.33*10^698

if you can not make it you can see that 5= 10/2

and (10/2)^1000 = 10^1000/2^1000

if you take the decimal log the log of 10¨1000 is 1000

and of 2^1000 = 1000log2 =301.07 and

1000-301.07= 698.9and 10^698.9 gives the result
