you are probably not looking for a modem, you are likely looking for an Ethernet card, that lets your PC talk to a modem/router

install, BELARC ADVISOR then run it,
it will give to a list of stuff on your PC. including memory, registry codes, and a load of other interesting stuff like your ethernet card

The place in the back of the computer to plug the phone line is your network adapter, not a modem. You need to go to your nearest radio shack or computer store and purchase a modem separately. Do you have an agreement with a Internet Service Provider? Sometimes they will send you the modem.

There are two possible causes:
1. The modem you have is either defective, or improperly installed.
2. Most likely, you need the drivers. Drivers are the software that enables Windows to talk to and see your modem. While Windows is supposed to be plug and play, Microsoft plays favorites and makes their favorite pro-Microsoft companies modems plug and play, while if Microsoft does not like you they make it a pain in the neck for you to get the driver software. It sounds like your modem is the latter. Either find the drivers or get a new modem which will include the drivers on a floppy or cd.

Remove the modem and restart, turn off then reinstall modem plug in phone line and restart, windows should then on boot-up notice the modem. It will ask for disk or driver location so be ready. Good luck.

Are you sure it's a modem and not a network card?

If you are sure it's a modem it's possible that it doesn't work anymore...they are easily zapped by lightning or power surges.

Try installing a standard modem through add hardware, and see if it works. If not, your modem is most likely blown.

You need to make sure that "phone connector" is a modem. An ethernet card has a connection that looks kind of like a phone connection.

Go to the manufacture web site, it wil ask you some info about your computer, and from there you can download the software and drivers for the modem. That's what I do with my hp computer.

These days you don't need a modem as such to connect to the internet - you just need a networking card and a LAN router. try contacting your ISP (i hope for your sake that they're more communicative than mine is!).
Also try looking for devices in device manager (Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager) and seeing what it says under "network adapters".

look in the device manager and see if the driver is installed , if not simply reinstall the driver , if you do not have the driver disk , remove the modem from the pc , look and see what kind it is and go to their website and download the driver
