The bigger the filter the better. I have the 50 on a 20 gallon guppy tank along with a whisper 10 and it's not too much. I don't know much about piranha but if they are really messy I would get the 70.

I've used aqua clear power filters for about 15 years now and have only had 1 out of 6 give up on me(that one lasted about 4 years)
I still have the first one that I ever bought and it still works great.
I would go with the 50 as the 30 is at it's limit and I am a firm believer that the more boi capacity the better.
I believe that most Piranha available for aquarists are from south american rivers so the Extra water flow from the 50 will do them some good.
I also add bio balls (strung together with fishing line) to the top layer at the output for more surface area for bacteria to grow.
This also helps when changing filter materials as I NEVER wash them so you always have that extra bacteria.
Easy to clean, Very quiet and very reliable.
For 20 - 50 U.S. Gal aquariums
- Maximum Output: 757 L/h (200 U.S. Gal./h)
- Full Flow Control: 250 L/h (66 U.S. Gal./h)
- Power Consumption: 6 W
- Maximum Aquarium Capacity: 189 L (50 U.S. Gal.)
- AquaClear is backed by a lifetime guarantee
- Flow Control: Simply shift the patented "Flow Adjustment Control" at the the intake siphon. When the "Flow Adjustment Control" is at its greatest blockage, AquaClear's input and exhaust volumes are approximately a third of its maximum capacity

The way to calculte the proper size filter for any fish tank is the rating for water moved through the filter in gallons per hour (gph). A filter should move between 5 and 10 times the volume of the tank every hour. So for a 30 gallon tank, you'd need a filter rated 150gph to 300gph. Go with the smaller number for small fish, understocked tanks, or fish that don't like rapid water movement. Go for the higher number (or up one filter size) for big fish, "messy" fish, fish that like fast flow, and tanks stocked to capacity. If using multiple filters, the combined gph ratings should add up to the 5-10 times the tank volume.

I'd go with a large filter, personally. It's almost impossible to "overfilter" a tank (unless the flow is too strong), plus, the more powerful filter won't be working as hard as a smaller on and should wear better in the long run. You can always adjust the flow if it's too strong.

properly the clear out I easily have is an Aquaclear. that is quiet efficient and uncomplicated to maintain. Ive had it for about 3 months now and has worked tremendous and it retains the water magnificent and sparkling and the fish chuffed. I easily might want to admit the reason i purchased it become because the community puppy shop had a 50% sale on their aqua sparkling products one weekend. It has a three level clear out gadget - first a sponge - then filtered via a carbon bag and finally a 'bio bag' (which i imagine is truly bag of porus rocks meant to carry 'solid micro organism'. Im no longer certain how the pump makes the water go via the three layers even though it style of feels to artwork tremendous. The sponge and bio bag are nevertheless in tremendous structure merely element i had to do is rinse them in some aquarium once. the merely area that i regulate is the carbon bag which I in a great number of cases replace once in line with month. wish this helps. Cheers

Personally, I would go with the larger model. Having owned Piranhas, I can tell you they are a messy fish.

Aqua Clear filters are very quiet and easy to maintain.

Good luck

Get the 50. More filtration above the absolute minimum is a good thing.

I have seen that the bigger the tank, the better for piranha's. They are pretty dirty fish. If you are looking for a coupon for petco, there are some at http://www.24houredeals.com/PETCO-coupons-318-mer.html

Good luck.
