There is a wide variety of egg shapes. Internal eggs, ovum, of mammals are round. Hard shelled eggs of birds are round to elliptical. Reptilian eggs can be round, elliptical or cylinders.

The there are many reason why eggs are the shape they are. Primarily, the shape has evolved over time to insure the continuation of the species. The internal anatomy of the females reproductive system. The basic physiology of the animal related to the composition of the egg(s). And, the environment in which the egg has to exist in.

Because if were shaped like a ball it might just roll off. Being slightly smaller at one end means it will roll in a circular direction and you are less likely to lose your chocolate egg!

And hands off until Easter!!

What sort of egg? Fish? Amphibian? Reptile? Bird? Mammal?

Most eggs are spherical unless there is selective pressure for them to be otherwise.

Fish eggs laid in water, small, spherical.

Amphbian eggs laid in water, moderate size (think frogspawn), spherical but in clusters.

Reptile eggs mostly spherical, think turtles & crocodiles.

Mammals eggs 'laid' internally, small & spherical.

Birds eggs vary a lot in size, shape and camouflage. Birds have nests. Spherical eggs roll easily out of nests, aspherical ones tend not to. So strong selctive pressure for non-rolling eggs.

,an eggs shell is soft when a chicken lays it it gets hard after the air hit its. so when the hen lays the egg just like a human bowel movement the muscles start tightening after the egg starts out and that's what pushes it on out and resulting in one end being smaller. just my theory..

To stop it rolling out of the nest..or cliff in the case of some seabirds..which is what would happen if it was spherical.
