The tree falling is " An Event" so your question really is " can an event occur if there is no one present to witness it?" The answer is yes, we are here and that is proof the Big Bang or similiar event had occurred long before there was any life in the universe to observe it.
Remembering : the falling of the tree will cause disturbances / vibrations in the air ( hence create sound).

Sound and noise are both defined using an observer; that is, someone to experience them. Without the observer there is nothing but waves in a medium (i.e. the vibration in the air created by the falling tree hitting the ground).
So, how to answer the question depends on what you are looking for: in real terms, yes, a sound is made. In definitional terms, there is no sound without an observer but there IS a disturbance in the medium.

Daniel C, is right on. For sound to be "heard" there must be a mechanism to turn the vibrations made into "sound". A tape recorder will do the same thing as a human (or animal) ear. Otherwise there is no "sound"...just vibrations.

of course it does just because you do not hear it that does not mean no sound was heard. If you talk to a deaf person and they do not hear you does that mean you are not talking
