There are a lot of theories but some of them wouldn't be applicable for all of the different types of races that there are.
One theory about automobile races is that, because the driver is located on the left of the car, if there is a wreck the car body absorbs a lot of the impact which would result in fewer injuries for the driver.
That wouldn't explain the counterclockwise direction in all the other types of races so I'm inclined to believe another theory. The Americans had such a hatred for the English because of the American revolution that they wanted to do things the complete opposite of them so ran their races counterclockwise.

That is a good question, and one that I have wondered about myself. It would be interesting to see the drivers adjust to a new direction. My only thought on the subject is that the first race tracks went that direction, and to make it easier on all the drivers, they just made all the tracks the same way. I say, these guys are professionals...make them change directions and see what happens.

maximum highway classes run clockwise, with some exceptions. on the formula One circuit, 3 tracks, Interlagos, Sao Paulo, Brazil., Imola, Italy and Istanbul, Turkey., run counter clockwise. apparently, the autos run counter clockwise on the oval at Indianapolis, besides the undeniable fact that, the line route used for the U.S. formula One Grand Prix, runs clockwise. there is one genuine anomaly and that i don't have an reason in the back of it; even as the *** Grand Prix became held on the Mt Fuji circuit, the F1 autos ran in a unmarried route, yet, even as the Indy autos raced there, they went the opposite direction around the music.

Simple, they tend to follow the counter clockwise motion of a toilet bowl when it flushes. Look hard enough and you'll see Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and DE Jr in there.
