I know its kind of early for him to be all happy and used to me and for him to let me pick him up but ive got a feeling hes going to be wary and scared forever. Is there something i can do to change this early on in his life?

Oooo I just went to his cage and he let me pet his nose and forehead. Is that a good sign?

I had exactly the same worries, mine used to run away from my hand or bite. But literally a week later they were fine - get them used to being handled daily and they'll soon love you!

Yeah, there are so many hamsters that are scared of their owners. You've got to let him get used to you and know that you're not going to eat him or something (lol). I was going to say you should try to gently pet him in his cage, but he already let you do that, and that is a wonderful sign!! Just keep trying to play with him and pet him every day so that he can get used to you. There is no magic trick to magically get him to love you one day, most hamsters are like this. Just give him time and lots and lots of love! Then, you'll be sure to win him over. Treats are good, too...
Good luck. =]

Hamsters are naturally skittish animals so everytime you go to pet him he will probably act scared. But he will get used to your smell and not run away quite so much as he gets to know you. When you go to pick him up...instead of reaching in and grabbing him right away...put your hand in the cage...palm up..and let him smell you and climb into your hand. You can take your other hand and kind of guide him into your hand. Then...make sure you have him securely so he doesn't feel like he is going to fall.
Hamsters are also nibblers so he may nibble a bit at your hand...nothing hard or bad..but you may feel him nibbling..just be sure and don't pull away quickly or it will scare him. Also, be sure you have a wheel or some way for your hamster to get excercise because they like to move a lot...especially at night. Have fun!

You have to look at this from the hamster's point of view. Your a giant compared to it and you just took it "captive". I would be scared too. Give it some time and be real real gentle with it, even talk to it so it starts to know YOU and YOUR voice. When it has decided that it is fairly safe it shouldn't be so jittery. Hamsters are like mice, they are prey animals and your the temporary predator so it'll be in survival mode for a few days

Hey i just got a new hamster yesterday. He is really fluffy and fat. His name is Chimo. ha well mine hamster does the exact same thing as yours. he will let me pick him up but then it is bye bye fingers cause he attacks me. it is a huge hassle to pick him up too because i bought him a three story crate :P What i reccomend doing is giving him a little treat of some sort every morning so he will recognize your scent and such. But keep in mind it is a hamster, Glue some cotton balls to a rock and it is almost as smart as a hamster. haha

The best thing to do is to interact with him as much as possible but not holding him the whole time but just sticking your hand in the cage and letting him sniff and interact and get used to being there. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

You can not push it. Let him get to know you first. Put his cage close to where you are & just do what you do. This should be something like home work, games, TV; you know things where you don't move much.
Sounds like he want's to get to know you. Just give it a little time. ~;}

yes wel i got my hampster and he was scared to when i first got him, but he then started getting used to me because i handled him very often. But he was six months old at the time, your hampster is probally a baby and misses his mum very much if i was you i would give him loads of love hold him once a day and give him lots of fruit.
