Lost ... Excellent question. That's right up there with questions like why do we park in our driveways and drive on our parkways. No, I'm not being facetious.

Anyway, please check my link below. I heard the very same question asked before and the explanation offered at the time referred to an atmospheric phenomenon that caused the light reflected by the moon to have a somewhat bluish tint to it. However, there apparently are other reasons.

Thanks for a good question, Lost.

A blue moon is simply the second full moon when there are two in one month.
It doesn't happen very often hence the expression.

There will be one in 2007:
The first full moon in May is on the 2nd. Another full moon - which would be the blue moon - occurs on May 31.
There will not be another until December 31 of 2009!

A blue moon occurs usually once a year and it is when there are two full moons in the same month. This happens because the orbital period of the moon is less than the average length of a month.

Of course it is. The moon turns blue every month because this is when the Moon Fairies (a species of aliens from the planet Abrocondor II) magically turn the moon from its usual feta cheese composition into blue cheese.

No, for reasons specified in other answers (except the blue cheese one).

However, there have been cases when atmospheric smoke particles have made the moon appear pale blue. This happened in England after large forest fires occurred in Canada.

Blue moon simply refers to the second full moon in a single month.
In language it refers to an uncommon occurence, as in I see them once in a blue moon.

No. It's just an expression which means very rarely.
As in 'she's really dirty. she bathes only once in a blue moon'

No that is just a term used to say that there was a full moon twice in one month.
