I had hypothyroid and it went unnoticed by the doc for almost a year.. ..

So before this thyroid problem, I was very very thin, I would eat like a cow and wouldn't gain a pound and then I got this problem and in about a year I put on 50 pounds.. got horrible stretch marks and cellulites all over my legs..I used to love wearing skirts and bikinis.. Now all I want to do is hide

All this time I would diet so hard but instead I would only gain gain gain.. and it depressed me so much..

Anyways.. I'm taking medication for my thyroid and I have been for like a month now and still no difference in my weight.. and no professional dieting place will help me because WITH THAT 50 pounds GAINED I'm now only at "normal" weight for my height..

But I'm so depressed and I don't fit into anything I used to wear.. in fact I hate myself now..

I was wondering if anyone can tell me about a diet or exercise method that will help me take all this weight off.. The weight I’ve gained is 70% in my legs.. I'm desperate!

There could be a few reasons why you aren't losing weight. You aren't exercising enough or reducing carbs enough...that's one reason, but most likely isn't the reason. Why I know, I've been there. It's most likely that your thyroid levels aren't right or that you are on the wrong medication. My first piece of advice is to learn as much as you can about being hypothyroid. Get copies of your blood work. Make sure you always test in the morning, otherwise you will get undermedicated. The morning TSH needs to be around 1.0 for weight loss to happen and to stop gaining.

Get your morning TSH around 1.0 and reduce carbs and hopefully weight loss will happen. If it doesn't, then its time for a T4/T3 medication like Armour.

I'll post a few links below. Learn, it's power

you still need to give your body time to get used to the medication. My brother had hypothyroid for a long time that went unnoticed. He slept constantly, and gained a bunch of weight. He went on medication and it did wonders for him. He had a lot more energy. You just need to remember to take your medication as directed or it will be harder to lose weight but once you have it controlled it isnt hard at all to lose weight. My brother, at the age of 18, weighed about 250lbs...which was when he first found out that he had hypothyroid. He is now 22 and has been trying to lose weight. In the past 6 months he has gone down to being 200lbs. It's really not that hard. Eat about 1300 calories a day...good food, salads, cut down on the carbs a bit. Exercise for at least an hour a day. I have tried to lose weight and for some reason my brother loses it faster than me. Just give your body a little more time to regulate and you should start losing weight.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I got the hypothyroid in my late 20's. I too had no problem losing weight - was fairly in shape. Now it is almost impossible to lose weight - i too have gained weight. However I have been on SEATTLE SUTTON diet which totally worked. It will totally take extra effort on your part at this point to lose th eweight. I too am on synthroid - have been on it for years and will be on it for years. Exercise regularly and eat right. That is th eonly thing that should work. YES it is frustrating!I'm right there with ya! Good luck. Another thing is ORLISTAT. I tried that and it totally worked for weight loss - like a miracle drug. But - it has nasty side effects so i stopped using it, but it DID WORK

If you're thyroid is being treated, it is not three times harder for you to lose weight than a normal person. Infact, if it's kept in check, it would be just as hard as the rest of us. Cut back your caloric intake to 1200 to 1500 per day (any lower than that would be dangerous), exercise daily and try to build muscle mass. Muscles burn more calories than fat.
