And they have lost weight tremendously, meaning, they are ill or something. Both are so thin, the look like babies now. And in the past, they where the fattest of all my hamsters.

During the summer and fall it is not uncommon for the fur on a hamster to thin out. If the temperature changes suddenly the loss may be more extreme resulting in bald patches. In general, this is not cause for concern as shortly the fur will being to fill back in.

However, fur loss in hamsters can be the result of something more serious. Common reasons include pests or parasites such as mites and ticks. Skin infections and mange can also cause fur loss. These diseases and infestations usually cause the skin to become dry and flaky. If they repeatedly scratch the area it could also forms scabs or sores.

Naturally if the condition is prolonged or you feel that your hamster does in fact of one of the aformentioned diseases you are advised to seek veternarian advice immediately.

If you are referring to the Russian dwarf hamsters (Winter White) they may just be shedding. It is getting closer to spring and temperatures are rising. The fur will sometimes come out in large clumps. Watch them for a bit, separate them if necessary to rule out the stress factor. If they are acting normal and still losing fur, then it could be just innocent shedding. Since this is the first spring you've had them you've never witnessed shedding before, I could see why it may come as a shock. As long as your hamsters are eating right, drinking lots of water, being around as active as they normally are, and have clear eyes, and nasal area they are fine and you have nothing to worry about.
