unless it's a laser mouse, it prob. needs to have the ball removed and cleaned. or buy a new mouse.

Pick the mouse up, remove the round circle (on the back, maybe) Remove the ball inside. There are some black rollers inside the mouse--allowing/assisting the ball to roll. Clean those off. (with your finger nail or some small flat object.) Those rollers get a build-up of dirt on them.

Get a optical mouse w/ a pad. You will like it better then the traditional mouse or the roll ball mouse... Which I hate

If it's not an optical mouse i.e. a ball mouse, take the ball out (turn circular bit anti-clockwise, and clean the ball. take any dust out from the mouse and put it back.
if it's optical, clean the lens with lense cleaner (CAREFULLY!!!!!)

your mouse pad and the little ball underneath the mouse might be dirty. Try cleaning or getting a new pad, and you can take thelittle ball out and clean it and the place it fits into.

Debris stuck on the rollers. Pop the ball out and give all the insides a clean.

Try taking the little ball out of the bottom that detects the movement, bounce it arond a little and get a damp papertowel and move it around where the ball goes and around the ball.

Try avoid drinking/eating by your computer.

You've probably got crap gummed up on the rollers. Take it apart and clean the small rollers inside with your finger, a knife or best rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip.
