Creams and lotions are good. And you should also, of course, avoid direct sunlight. But the most important thing is having a proper diet and getting enough exercise for good blood circulation. You must eliminate all hot things from your diet, such as onions, red peppers, etc. Drink lemon juice, and eat carrots and greens. If you are non-veg. avoid anything except fish and that too you should not eat fried. A little bit of red wine (maybe half a glass a week) will be good for your skin. And, of course, you should wear clothes made of natural materials such as cotton or silk, but it should be smooth, not rough. Plus, you should walk at least a mile every day, as rapidly as you can (you should be able to walk a mile in less than 20 minutes). And, always, before you go to bed, take a shower, but don't rub your skin too hard -- just enough to take off the dirt and oils that accumulate throughout the day.

The only really effective way is to use the highest SPF cream that you can and stay out of the sun. I have heard that regular exfoliation will help but I can't vouch for that. In the meantime, remember - many people would love to have a good tan, so make the most of it!

The best ayurvedic treatment is nothing but
(i) Take some turmeric powder+some curd
(ii) Mix it
(iii)Apply it on your skin
Caution:- don't apply it where you have got dark but apply it whole of your skin and wash it with any soap.

Get aloe lotion/gel and apply it to keep your skin from peeling. Use SPF 30 or higher from now on and stay out of the sun.

Stay out of the sun. But, If you have to, protect yourself ie; cover up your arms, legs, wear a hat. I don't believe I know of any quick fix. You'll have to let nature takes its course on this one.
