If i gave money to a charity, how much of that money would actually go to the cause. I am affiliated with a charity, and if somebody goes to their website and makes a purchase i make £30 in commission. This surely is wrong? I don't have a this link on my site because i think if you were good enough to give money to charity why should it go into my bank account. What are your views on this?

Well yes, that is rather disgusting. But unfortunately some charities do this. You just have to hope that the charity you choose to donate to isnt like that. Some of them just pretend to be helping all the poor people but they really just give to the poor the spare change that they have left. Some charities, however, do give the majority of what is sent to them to the poor, becasue a lot of charity workers are doing it voluntarily without being paid. The charities you would be fairly safe with are ones like Oxfam and Christian Aid... because when a charity has a high profile they can't afford to keep much money because they are more likely to be found out :P

I agree with you, money that you donate to charity should all go to charity. The problem is that lots of people don't want to make a loss on their efforts to give to charity, so will take a proportion of the donations. This means that lots of money which people think are going to charity isn't. This is really wrong, and you should see if you can donate the £30 you get in commission back to the charity, and encourage others to do the same.

However, I don't think that people should be forced to be completely aware of this matter, because if they were going to give £100, then found £30 was going into some well-off person's pocket, they might think again before giving their £70 to someone who really needs it and might have their life saved because of it.

You could take it up with whoever runs the charity, and bring to their attention the moral issues with this problem, and see if you can persuade them to give more of the money to those who need it more.

Before donating money, I inquire about overhead costs and what percentage of the donations goes to the charities and which parts pays salaries and administration fees.
