Stegosaurus belonged to the group of armored dinosaurs which were descended from an earlier ancestors called Thyreophora.They lived in the late Jurassic into the early Cretaceous periods.They were low browser plant eaters.They are also called roof lizards.

The family is Stegosauria. Stegosaurs are in one of the two great orders of dinosaur; Ornithischia, which mean "bird hipped". The other great order is Saurischia, which means lizard hipped.
