Usually money applied to the person's bank in prison is the best as most items they have to buy from the commissary cart. The items on this cart are about 3 to 10 times more expensive than on the outside.

A Cake with a file in it :) Just kidding you should take them something they really used to enjoy but don't get in prison. i don't know the security level so i don't know what they let you take in but some kind of snack they used to love or Possibly a book or magazine they used yo read or would enjoy. It really depends on the person.
Stereotypically it would be cigarettes:)

Ask the person what they need. Then ask the prison guards if the items are acceptable. Good Luck !!!
