I was told "You aren't as dumb as you look"
Was I insulted?

That is a comment almost always meant in jest. I wouldn't try analyzing it.......just laugh.
Whenever I have used this expression, I am referring to myself and I am saying it to be silly OR to make a point that I may appear dumb, but I am not! It is never meant to be taken seriously,my friend. Have a happy day.

well it depends on the person who you were told this by because i say that about myself sometimes odd huh and no i'm not dumb i just use it as a figure of speech

how did you feel when you were told this?
if it was something you laughed at well it's just maybe the person thought they were going to get one over on them but guess what you sure fooled them
this is really how you can tell an insult from a compliment

a compliment makes you feel good

and an insult usually makes you feel sad
unless it is used by a real good friend and both of you laugh about it (just like the "your mama"jokes my daughter tell me theses all the time and like wise i say them back of course talking about my self i think some people just need to have a good sense of humor

It's an insult dressed up to look like a compliment.

It's kinda in between but I'd take it as an insult because whoever said that ment that they thought you were dumb but you are not that dumb actually...

Insulting to your looks, a somewhat "back-handed" compliment on you knowledge.

It was an insulting compliment, whoever said it was patronizing you. You should have responded with "I wish I could say the same about you".

Well, it depends on who said it..

"You aren't as dumb as you look"

well thats saying you may look/act dumb, but you aren't.

I personally would take this as a compliment. Its like saying "You may look dumb, but you aren't"

This insinuates you look dumb. Depending on the tone of voice, you may have been insulted, yes.
