Embedded means that the driving software (usually operating system) is the part of the device that do the function intended. Printer's driver is an example of embedded software. For example telephone switch or router/server, they have dedicated software (operating system) specific for the job. Contrary to the development multiuser systems like Unix or Windows. They synergycally optimize hardware and software for performance (usually real time). If designed well they have no disadvantages.

They're easy to use and maintain. They aren't very scalable and in most cases are limited to the components they came with. I assume you mean systems with embedded operating systems. Though they are only designed to fill a very specific role and I wouldn't use them in a dynamic, constantly changing environment.
