Why is 'why is 13 an unlucky number' the most frequently asked question on this messageboard?
At least 3 people have asked the same question in as many days.
It's pure superstition. There is no such thing as an 'unlucky number'. However, the belief is so strong that you often get e.g. number 13 left out in hospital wards, 13th house numbered 12A, etc.

Why 13 is famous as Unlucky?
Alexander wanted to be a God and accordingly made a 13th statue on the place of his capital. He died and people considered that his will to be a 13th God (12 gods, one for each month were known) was the reason of his death. After that this number was considered as unlucky.
According to historians, there were 13 people at Christ's Last Supper and Christ was crucified on Friday 13th. So, Friday 13th is considered as Unlucky.

Because 1 is the symbol of the sword and 3 is the symbol of the Trinity|
Since God is the summation of all good, saying 1 as applied to 3 in the number 13 is an attack upon all good with the symbolic sword.
I remember years ago flying in airplanes|
I always loved that because of the view of the land 1000s of feet up|
The person assigning the seats to me in a particular flight suggested that I take seat 13 because it was good luck (a bit naive of me at the time to accept that)|
When I got to the seat, I found that I was right over the wing, severely restricting my view, so it was a frustrating flight|
People often observe that bad things happen on Fri. 13th| That is not superstition, but is a manifestation of the principle of *synchronicity* as laid out by Jung|
Synchronicity is a higher level physical law than that described in the classical mathematical based sciences such a physics|
It is based not upon mathematical patterns in things (as in classical Newtonian or Einsteinian physics), but in association by *meaning* value - such as bad things happen in threes|
I woman I know had a butterscotch cat killed on the road outside of her house| Then another butterscotch cat, just like it, was killed 100 meters down the road| She says: "that's weird." And I reply: "That's synchronicity, or what alternatively is called 'parallelism.'"

Because a man once invited 12 of his friends to a dinner party and the first one of the 13 to leave was killed.

Well, some religions think this, but whats unlucky or lucky all really depend on how you see it. Do you avoid a black cat's path? Well, if thats the way you see it......
then it is.
good luck! lol
