That is an interesting question. Thank you (not many of those now days). But I don't think you need to describe the universe for him. Talking about the Universe - we are all blind, don't you think? Everyone of us has own Universe. You'd better ask him about his one. I am sure he can tell you a lot. Try to really find out what Universe is your neighbour in (or mister Bush for example). You'd be surprised how different our worlds are. So don't make him feel that he is the one who don't know the Universe while the rest of us have learnt and understood about it. It is just not true.

If I had to describe the world to him,I'd choose places I think that would show him what the world is like. I'd take him to the woods and let him touch the trees, sit in the grass, touch a trees leaves, and hear the birds.I'd then ask him to tell me what he thinks the world is like, then I'd paint a picture for him in his mind,of how the grass is swaying with the breeze, and how the trees have dark green leaves, and how the lake looks (this is just an example). I'd then want to take him other places, maybe a shopping mall, and let him hear all the noises, and go different places. I'd then again ask him what he thinks he would see in the shopping mall, then I'd describe details of store windows, and the people racing n the world around you. I'd then want to take him to other places I think would be effective, like maybe to the city (if you live near one), and maybe some places in your town that could describe what the world is like.

Blind people have all other senses very developed.
So you can describe the world in terms of savors, odours, music and ever feeling: white is velet, black is etc... or a nice landscape by listening to Beethoven's pastoral symphony (sorry if this sounds like a cliché).
Good luck! With heart and sensibility you will find a way.

You are sadly deluded if you think the universe is what you see.
The Universe is just a moving pattern of energy. What you call the Universe is entirely created by yourself, by your conscious mechanism. There is no light or colour sound or smell in the Universe. These are all experiences manufactured by your own consciousness in response to what actually exists.
Having no functioning eyes, your cousin just has one fewer layer of delusion than you do.

I'd take him to a 4Th of July fireworks gathering and while he is listening to the fireworks go off,I'd tell him to imagine each boom was a new star in the sky and that it never stops because the universe is endless..That the blackness of the universe was exploding with light as some planets burn out and others are born.

You see, words can explain anything and they can help a blind person imagine what is being decribed to him/her... All u need to do is get the right words and with a little bit of ur imagination to make ur blind cousine see the universe from inside.... just visualize it from inside....
Good luck....

Tell him that the universe is so large, so far-reaching, that in relation to having seen the universe, the difference between those who can see (you) and those who can't see (your cousin) is negligible.
To emphasize just how huge it is, give him a kernel of corn and have him compare it to the sum of all places he's ever been to- that is the earth in relation to the universe.

You could maybe describe it like infinity. Every number can be doubled and trebled and there is no end to the amount of times you can do it. Therefore numbers are endless and so is infinity that is also how big and endless the universe is.
