There seems to be a lot of blood because it has all 'gathered' - I know that sounds gross but we actually wipe away more blood than collects on tampons or towels. Also, often when you get up (i.e. to walk to the bathroom) any blood that has been sitting in your vagina while you were sitting down move down due to gravity.
I know it seems like a lot but it is actually only about 40-60mls of blood that you lose during your period (3 tbsps) but this depends on your age, size and weight, and obviously whether you have heavy periods or light periods.
If you have really heavy periods or bleed for a long time (i.e. longer than a week) then you may want to visit your doctor as this is not 100% normal - not that there is anything actually wrong with you but your doc will be able to suggest a range of treatments to make things easier for you.
Good luck.

It just looks like that because the blood can spread but it is better to get it out when you use the restroom instead of during something. My girlfriend once had it in the middle of a party and got really embarressed. It is better in the toilet.

Sometimes you might actually have a lot of bleeding, but most people overestimate the amount when they see blood. Also, the muscles used to push out urine and bowel movements may also stimulate the uterus to contract and you get a little "gush:" that you are aware of at the time.
If bleeding is really excessive, the amount on tampons or pads would also be very heavy.

it does look like a lot dosen't it. but actually of the waste you loose during your period only about 30% of it is blood. but when you go to the toilet it gets diluted in your urine and look slike masses. especialy in a white toilet. also the urine kinda washes some of the waste off and that also goes into the toilet. not that i would rely on that sort of wash. anyway i hope that helped.

Because the blood disperses in the toilet water and therefore looks like there is much more than there actually is.

When you push to empty your bladder or bowels, all the muscles in the pelvic area work together, so more blood pushes out of the uterus than when you are not going to the toilet.

I know what you mean! I have read though that the average woman only looses an egg cup amount of blood during their period. I dont belive that lol. But apparently this is the truth?

when you go to the bathroom your muscles are more open due to the fact that you are going to the bathroom so the blood flows more frequently, pluse it is mixed with the water in the toilet so it tend to look like there is a lot more of it

Very good question, I suppose there is not that much blood but it appears like loads because you are looking at it. Depends how heavy your period is as well.

Its just built up in there your muscles are naturally tightened but when you use the bathroom your release your muscles and it all comes out. Actually it looks worse sitting there in the white toilet, but it is the same amount that is absorbed an a Kotex or tampon. I think that's a good thing. Get it out I say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
