This is something that I have always wanted to know.
Is there anything wrong if I were to enjoy watching the lunar eclipse? Is it stupid for me to do that? Will I be considered time wasting if I were to sit back to enjoy the event?
A few years ago, when I was still in the university, a lunar eclipse occurred. As this event was given some publicity in the local papers, I decided to join a group of people to watch the event.
Sometime later in the night, when I went to the lab to complete my research work, I brought up this subject to a schoolmate in the lab.
The schoolmate thought I was nuts to waste my time watching the eclipse. He also thought that I was an idiot to do such a thing, something all agile youngsters should never do.
Was it wrong? As far as I can see, I did not waste any time when I sat back to watch the eclipse. After all, some other university students were also with me. I had also just taken my bath and I was on my way to the lab.
What did I do wrong?

I certainly don't see this as a waste of time; this is something that usually only occurs every couple of years or so, and I think the chance to observe anything you find interesting is worth your time.
I've never quite understood why people worry about how someone ELSE spends their time. Your schoolmate presumably wasn't dragged along to see something he considered useless, and presumably your actions didn't affect him in any way other than your chance mention; beyond that, I don't know why he'd even care. When someone DOES care, I have to question their motives. Perhaps he's simply not comfortable with someone who has an intellectual interest in a phenomenon, especially if he's not particularly cerebral himself. Whatever the reason for his objection to your use of your own time, I think it's something you simply have to accept as his point of view, and then ignore. There will always be somebody telling you that what you choose to do isn't "correct" by their standards; while you can respect their opinion, you certainly have every right to disagree with it, and do what matters to YOU :-)
I hope you got to see the one that just occurred - I had to miss it as it's very cloudy here, but I'd certainly have been out there watching with everybody else if I'd thought I had a chance to see it! I believe the next one is expected in August, btw, and it's usually clear here at that time of year, so I'm hoping for the best. Happy watching!!!

Hi there,
There is nothing wrong in watching the eclipse actually its nice that you can take interest in such things. They are interesting and also makes you alot more knowledgeable. We always have learn in science how this things happen but have never had a first hand experience. I saw the eclipse yesterday it was one the most amazing things I have done.
Some people tend to think its a waste of time but thats their opinion and should not impose it on anyone else. So dont worry you arent stupid or wasting your time. Just ignore those who think its not worth something you may enjoy it is not necessary they should.

The only thing you did wrong was to care what the schoolmate thinks. The more you need approval, the less likely you will be to get it.
Next time you get a reaction like that, look at the guy and ask him what he was doing at that time. If he was sleeping, laugh. If he was drunk in a pub somewhere, laugh and ask him if he remembered it. If he was in the lab the whole time, ask him if that is where he thinks all agile youngsters should be.. and then laugh. You get the drift.

The recent lunar eclipse was a fine sight, I would recommend it to anyone. Sit back and relax and witness palpable evidence that the world is actually spinning through space, a good time to sit and contemplate you're own insignificance on a universal scale.

I had a similar thing last night., I text a friend to say it was starting and her response was 'im in the pub and ill loose my seat'??? I think thats unbelievable. The eclipse is something of natural beauty and I think that we are fortunate to be able to see something like this.
I suppose it has a lot to do with priorities and how we see life. I reckon we have the right idea by watching it. So heres to the next eclipse!

Sounds to me like you forgot to put your clothes back on after your bath. That's what you done wrong, as well as listening to your small minded schoolmate, he sounds like the sort of person with absolutely no aspirations. Apart from that, everything was fine. I look forward to an eclipse, they are good to watch.

Why do you automatically assume you've done something "wrong" as a result of one persons stupid remark? Do you truly believe that watching an eclipse is wrong? I don't get it. Is there something you're leaving out of the story? Otherwise, I don't understand your concern.

One mans meat is another mans poison - I enjoy events like this and there are plenty others who do, at the same time there are people like your friend who have no interest at all. You are certainly not hurting anyone by such instances and would ignore there dis-interest in same.
