Best modern sci-fi film: Dark City! Unbelievable film. Comparisons on some things exist between Dark City and The Matrix, but Dark City is better than The Matrix will ever be. Sometimes sci-fi fans will debate about Dark City and The Matrix and which is better. I have heard some people say Dark City ripped off elements of The Matrix, but seeing as how DC came out in 1998 and the Matrix came out in 1999 I dont see how thats possible. In fact, sets from Dark City, including rooftops, buildings and others exteriors, were reused when filming The Matrix, so who's the real ripoff?

Dark City was very critically accalimed despite tanking in the box-office. Roger Ebert wrote an article on it for his "Great Films" category, to which only a small number of films have this honor. Ebert liked it so much he actually does an entire solo commentary track on the DVD(It was his #1 movie of 1998).

The basic plot summary: John Murdoch (played by Rufus Sewell) struggles trying to remember things about his past. His childhood and events from his failed marriage seem like they happened but proof of their details is hard to find. That is because a group known only as "The Strangers" erase human memories every midnight and shape-shift the city into new configurations for fresh experiments. But there is one problem, John Murdoch's time/life never stops during these time changes, so he is fighting to stop the Strangers and find out the truth. John is aided in his quest by a mysterious doctor(played by Keifer Sutherland) who is helping John despite being the source of all The Strangers experiments.

Supposedly the origional Directors Cut included more and was even better, but I have not seen this version and could not compare the two. However, there has been talk of a Directors Cut DVD, which has had some problems seeing the light of day, but hopefully this will come out sometime in 2007!

***One Final note***
Many fans of the film(including myself) prefer to watch it with the sound turned off during the opening narration, until the first appearance of Kiefer Sutherland. The opening narration was not included in the origional theatrical cut, and many people do not like it and think it weakens the introduction of the film. So just a thought for when you watch it if you want to do it that way.

Serenity by Joss Whedon it has been about for a little while now but its the best sci- fi film I have seen in along time. It was a follow on from his show firefly. The only other one that was quite good was Alien V's Predator but that's quite old now too.

Equilibrium was an underrated sci fi. I resisted renting it for years as the cover makes it look like a Matrix rip off but it's actually a great film!
