Why wont it download the free version on Windows Vista? Starts off OK then asks to register and pay.

Make very sure you download SPYBOT SERACH & DESTROY 1.4 - THAT is the free version!! Do yourself a favour and also download AdAware Se Personal. It is FREE and works wonders - especially in conjunction with Spybot

According to the Spybot web site you should be able to download the free version so long as you have administration rights: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/compatibility/ossupport.html

Have you gone to their website itself, or are you using download.com or somewhere similar? I had a similar problem on someones xp, even though I run vista though I don't use spybot anymore, I use CCleaner and Avast, as not all xp compatible software will run on vista, even if it says so.
Wasn't spybot always free, with the paypal donation button in the program? Make sure it is spybot and not a dodgy virus named spybot, as there is one.

Spybot has always being free, it dose not charge, it can ask for donations but never asks for money upfront. try a different downloaded version.

Then you downloaded the wrong Spybot... try again... www.download.com search for spybot.. MAKE SURE U GO BELOW THE ADS... U want Spybot 1.4... there are some websites out there that look like spybot... but they arent... and they make u pay. cheaters... Good luck :)
