With every festival there are some mythologies involved. Try to understand the messages within those mythologies. There was an age when festivals were not a mode of enjoyment but a media to refresh ourselves with those messages and lead our life accordingly. These days, even though we remember the mythological stoiries behind the festivals, but we have forgotten the messages.

FIrst of all we should go into the psychae of why the festivals and celebrations are there.
Can you eat same dish over and over againfor say a period of an year? No, not even it is your best dish, because you'll get over nutrition in whatever it has and under-nourished in other minerals and vitamins. That is the reason your mind starts rejecting it. Same is the case with our routines, our efficiency goes down and monotony needs to be broken so we celebrate birthdays etc. This is on a personal front, then make it more often we reward ourselves on small achievements. This not only proves our worth to us but sends the signals to our mind that we like this work and in return our productivity increases. Spending small money for larger gains is thus profitable.
Now, same reason applies to the society at large or the whole nation. These become festivals etc. over a period of time and on its arrival mind automatically is programmed to like it, to ward off the negative influences and be ready to accept the positives.
This is the prime reason to celebrate and nations are built on these celebrations itself. If somebody doesn't celebrate (you can try it) will not be able to survive for long. Or if somebodyrises above celebrations - becomes a saint and role model for achieving the feat like Mother Teresa (she worked for the happiness and celebrations of others and didn't get demotivated) or Mahatma Gandhi.

Lot. I personally feel festivals rejuvinate us. Even if we spend quite heavily we are charged up for rest of the year. My personal experience is as we are located in very lonely place, with no friends to celebrate many festivals we are usually stressed and depressed but during the year there are many festivals which we celebrate irrespective of community like kite flying festival and that gives us immense happiness and joy. So celebrate all the festivals you can.

Celebration is very important. We need to lift our level of collective happiness to the level of celebration off and on so as to avoid stagnation in our emotions and to keep the collective emotional intelligence in the positive field.
Occassions have been cleverly designed (keeping in view the weather, the finances and availability of foodstuffs and also health aspects) by the yester-generations to encourage communal participation and social bon-homie.

Celebrating festivals is one way of rewarding ourselves for the little victories we accomplished in life or to make light of our struggles and difficulties we are facing.
it is more on the side of enjoying life and the happiness we get as it comes to us.

Every human being has right to be happy as long as he/she doesnot disturb others.
On the days of festival, "we should enjoy and let enjoy" other poor help less people by sharing food and nice things with them.
But No one should be annoyed by our noise and dirt that we spray around.
