Depends on the utopia describing 'ideal', but the best reason a person should teach is that some teacher in his/her youth inspired him/her to learn, without the use of threats nor punishment. You know? That teacher you admired because she/he was "real" and treated you with respect and understanding. The one that didn't so much worry about the grades, but made sure you got it; understood it in your terms.
If you keep this in mind all through college and Prac Teaching, and take it with you when you get your own classroom, that is what is going to make the difference whether you make it or break it. And seeing each student as an individual- not as a statistic. You might not reach all of them at once, but if you're interested enough, and do your homework, you could make a difference to the next generation that has to deal with this world we live in. But, don't ever enforce your ideology on any student- let them find their own. You can guide them, but you can't brainwash them into thinking you are right- if you do, their parents will be down your throat quicker than you can say "freedom!"
And the most patience you'll need is to get through all the red tape, i.e.: bureaucracy. Implanted in the Education system by government officials who want to raise as many patriots and soldiers as they can!
Do you dare be more than their "ideal"?

First, be willing to work for nothing, want to help children that their parents did not discipline, be ready to teach liberalism, and don't try to be creative. Be sure you have some insurance because you will be sued for something ridiculous.
