The best way to decide that is to look at your finances. One big repair job could cost a good bit BUT it also is a one time fee. You get a new car and you have months and months (often several years) to pay off. If in your day to day life your taurus serves you just fine, I'd just repair it. I did that with my 1992 Acura and am very glad I don't have a car payment to worry with for a good while. Good luck! :)

depends how much you like the car. put the problem up against making payments on a new car. You can likely have your car totally repaired for what you would have to pay in two or three car payments, that's not even the TAX on a new car. then you are done, until the next break down. I have three vehicles an '86 F150 that I would drive anywhere on the continent right now, an '88 Buick and my latest is a creme puff '88 dodge dynasty. No bank has anything to do with any of these vehicles so I don't mind when I have to occasionally throw $1000 to keep them in in safe running condition. besides, thee are no new vehicles presently made that I would consider worth the hassle of ownership.

It all depends on how well your car has been maintained up until now. If you know that it has not received regular engine oil and coolant changes as well as transmission oil changes, then I wouldn't invest the $3200 it will take to replace the transmission with a new Ford remanufactured transmission. The A/C can be very expensive to fix also if it needs a new compressor. So you'd probably end up not fixing it.

if it has trans problems they can normally be found in junk yards for 300$if more you are being robed it took me 4 hrs to change mine in a 98 taurus and seals get replaced it cost me 450 total. is your car worth 450? can get the codes at any auto parts store they have scanners it will tell u what is exactly wrong with the car .i am assuming it is a 3.0 with a axod trans. if it runs and drives and shifts through all the gears drive it as far as you want a new car can break down on a long trip to new trans is 1400
at the dealer ship no man is worth 2000 for 4 hrs

I dont know how far you have to drive to get home on your vacation, but you might look into renting a loaner just for this occasion to prevent being stranded.
