After connecting the cable and turning on the laptop and TV, perform the following:

Step 1

Change the channel to "AV". Most TVs have more than one; usually the AV (audio-video) connector at the back corresponds to AV1 and the AV connector at the front corresponds to AV2.

Step 2

Your laptop should have an "Fn" key for laptop-related functions. It should also have another key on the top row, among the F1-F12 keys with a picture I can describe as follows:

It has a rounded rectangle followed by a vertical line and a picture of a laptop display.
OR
It has a rounded rectangle with either only vertical lines on the sides or an outer rectangle.
OR
Anything else that looks like a monitor or display.

You have to hold down the "Fn" key and press the other key (the one described above). You may have to do this more than once.

Alternative to Step 2

Right-click on your desktop and select properties. Go to the Settings tab and click the Advanced button. Depending on your graphics driver, you should have the settings to switch between displays on the Monitors tab or some other tab; these tabs will usually have an icon indicating that they have been added by the graphics driver.
