as struggle has left the lives of those in affluent countries, so has meaning in their lives, so they are always looking for the next big thing. When you don't have to struggle for survival, life is essentially pointless and boring. Bring on the new toy to distract us from the humdrum world we live in.

If you're referring to the Walkmans that played cassette tapes, then I think people were glad to move on from them for a number of reasons. Not only because it meant no more 'chewed' tapes, but because later 'personal music systems' were smaller, and lighter. I have a Walkman from the early 1990's.It measures roughly 13 x 9 x 3 centimetres (6 x 3.5 x 1.5inch, roughly). It's pretty chunky. And, you can only play one cassette at a time, so if you want a variety of music, you'll need to carry a big backpack.
Convenience isn't a word that comes to mind.

They ate batteries up like they were going out of style. If it was cold outside, then the battery life was reduced even more!
It has nothing to do with the quality of the music or anything. It was the friggin batteries. Trust me. I had a Walkman and I hated it for that one reason. I ended up not listening to my tapes and just listened to the radio. That way, my batteries lasted a day and not an hour :D

(1) It's difficult to move with a Walkman than an ipod/mp3 player
(2) Memory limitation
(3) Battery duration

walkmans are big and clunky. u have to carry cds around with u if u want to listen to more than 15 songs.
think of an iPOD, double (maybe tripple?) its size, with the capacity to hold no more than twenty songs. oh, and add the extra features of buttons which hardly work, and music that skips with every third step you take. also, you cant synchronise it with anything.

I suppose this could be rephrased as "why weren't people content with clicking two sticks together?"
I don't like technology much more than you do, but here we are together, using it.
