Planets are pulled round in their orbits by their star's gravity. The further away they are, the weaker the pull, so they don't move as quickly. Being further away their orbits are also longer, so it's a double whammy!

Their distance from the sun. Nothing more or less.
Since orbits are (slightly) elliptical, the distance and speed changes throughout each orbit.
