Let me add that shutting down your PC down daily will decrease its components overall life.
From hot to cold state causes the damage, for those who only know how to send email's and download viruses.

Hibernating can be used most of the time. Its best advantage is that the computer starts up faster the next time you start it. There is no need to wait for Windows to load.
Hibernating does not use electricity. It is the same as standby (switching it off) except that it saves the current state of the computer and continues from the same state when the computer is re-started.
However, it is good to go standby after several times of hibernating because there might be 'memory leaks' from programs or no longer needed processes that are still running.
Memory, CPU processing and performance of the computer on the whole will be affected. Shutting down the computer will reset everything and restore performance.

this is up to the personal's pref:
1) standby (aka sleep mode) = won't shut down the computer, just lowing down the power usage, whatever you're doing, will still be there when you come back the next day to finish it up, and everything will back up and ready to run....faster. Good right? But not so good, when the power got interrupted, ie, during the rain, thunderstorm, or whatever happens to make the power went out; so, whatever you were doing, and haven't saved before you left, would lost,
2) Hibernating - same almost as Standby, but will automatic save your unfinished job for you, then shut itself down to the minimum power usage, but it will take longer time to get the computer back on, because it needs to load everything back to the last state you left it.
Now, you got what both each does, and its function, your turn to decide what's best for you.
Here's my suggestion. Every now and then, you would hear that many new viruses and spywares coming out everyday, so it's hard for us to keep up with that, that would leave that job to those security people and softwares. What I would do is, leave the computer on at night, put it in either mode, and it will be ready to update or download the new (don't forget Windows updates itself from Windows.com) of those viruses and spywares patches from security companies, and restart the computer every few days, to refresh the computer, so it can refresh its own memory usage. After few days of using computer without restart, your computer would slow down a bit, because of all the programs have used up the memory, thus the reason to restart your computer is the highly recommended (if you leave your computer on all the time).
If you are going out for at least a day, I would recommend turn it off, and turn it back on when you're want to use it.
Turn it off and on too many would cause electrical spike inside your computer, which is not good for your computer, btw. Spare that power switch.

In standby you computer still keeps using power, though very little. But with hibernate your computer is same as switched off except that your session is saved and is resumed when you restart your computer.
Apparently Kim Komanda has explained this thing in quite detail when I was posting :)

It's better to turn it off, to give your computer a rest and also to save electricity, even in stand by or hybernate mode, your computer is running freely, there's no problem even leaving it on for the whole week, the only problem is electricity cost.
