It means exactly what it says.

If you add anything to i am, it starts to become a limitation. If you simply say that I am, nothing is excluded.

God introduces himself this way in the bible. It is perhaps the only way that God could introduce him/herself.

Language itself is limiting. If you say that I am this, or I am that you immediately start to limit what you are talking about.

Saying that something is this or that automatically gives the idea that it is not something else. God is everything. There is no point where God ends and something else starts, so saying that God is this or that does not work. If God is the cause of everything then it is inappropriate to add anything to the introduction I am.

God could have said that I am the ocean, I am the trees, I am the sand, I am the stars, I am the moon, I am the sun, Etc, Etc, but it would have made for a very long introduction. So God in his wisdom chose to end the introduction at just the right place.

It means the fact of existence.
It doesn't have to be defined exactly to have relevance.
The answer to that question may be as simple as the foregoing.
Pushing it beyond that does not seem to be necessary,if you do you will have to live with uncertainty.

First of all it is a complete sentence.
Secondly: I am means that I exist.
I function as a human being.
I take up space in this universe.
I take in oxygen and exhale.
I eat.
I sleep
I have bodily functions that rid me of bad things.
I walk.
I talk.
It all boils down to: I AM BECAUSE I AM A FUNCTIONING HOMO SAPIEN.

It means who ever you think you are. That doesn't make it true, but to you, you are what you beleive you are. That is who I am means to you. No one can dispute what "I am means to you".

it means 'you are'. its the shortest complete sentence in the english language. in the sentence 'i am' - 'am' is a verb. therefore you are saying that you 'are'. (you are living, present, 'with it'). HOWEVER, remember that it is a question- so you are asking if you are living, present, 'with it'.

Sum ergo sum. I don't believe this is provable, but if we slip into solipsism nothing is.
