The BATTLE of Iwo Jima was in WWII

48 states existed during WWII, when the Battle of Iwo Jima was fought. Each star represented one state. Hawaii and Alaska were admitted into the Union after WWII. Thus today, our flag has 50 stars.

well Alaska and Hawaii were not yet states so they would not yet have stars.
