Thirteen is a tricky one. Your daughter is about to hit her teenage years and she'll want more freedom and independance. This means more trust on your part.
I think the ideal gift for a 13 year old is a set of personalised plates for a car. This will give her something to aim and work towards and will give her some direction. Suggest she get a part time job or start babysitting in order to start saving up for a car. Get her excited about being a teenager and about getting more trust and freedom and she'll love it. Personalised plates are expensive but they are a one time thing and i think they are worth the money when you consider that she'll be able to look at them everyday and look forward to the day she can purchase her own car.
It's also a great way to start teaching her good money skills such as prioritising and self control. This will make it easier for her later in life as she'll have the ability to set her eyes on something, calculate how much she will need to save and start doing it. You can help by telling her that for every $50 she puts into her bank for the car, you'll contribue an amount to it too. The amount is something you'll have to work out with her but it will show her that you'll reward her for thinking ahead and reaching for a goal.

Hi i answered a question like this yesterday, going by personal experience as i have 3daughters(All in 30s now)If shes a girly girl you can go for one of these makeover days where they do her nails, hair and makeup, then have her photo taken. My girls and i did this last year and we were really pampered and now we have this photo of the 4of us as a memory to look back on,There are many experience days to choose from. They grow so fast and one day all your left with is your memories,be honest what in this day and age do the kids need?No longer are Cd's and DVDs looked upon as a great present,i think a day out with your soon to be teenage daughter is priceless. You know her better than anyone,go have a day to remember with her.
Happy birthday to your little girl.
