There are many ways to look at injection systems EFI, MPI, and MFI. Electronic Fuel Injection is the type of system. Main systems are EFI or MFI (electrical or mechanical). MPI is a sub system description of the first. So you now have a choice of Single Port Injection or Multiport Injection. Most SPI are nothing more that a Carburetor body/ or valve body that has been adapted to accept a single injector feeding all the cylinders. Multiport breaks down into two classifications --direct or indirect . In a Direct system the fuel is being supplied directly to the the combustion chamber why Indirect it is being supplied to the intake manifold(s) or precombustion chamber (diesels), From there you can have single or multiple injectors feeding one combustion chamber.
so in theory you can have a Electronic single multiport direct fuel injection , Mechanical dual multiport indirect fuel injection, Electronic single port indirect fuel injection, or about a hundred combinations depending on how many intake manifolds, how many Injectors, and how many injectors per cylinders.

EFI=Electronic Fuel Injection. MPI=MultiPort Injection. In most cases, these are the same. EFI simply means the injection is computer controlled. MPI means there is an injector for each cylinder. Most vehicles nowadays are both, but there were some cars that had mechanical MPI.
