Of course I don't know anything about your friend, or whether she already has hamsters or has had them before...but I personally think getting someone an animal as a surprise is usually a REALLY bad idea, especially for the animal....and also for the person, if they're not really willing to take the responsibility for a new pet.
Before you go ahead and get her a hamster, try to be 150% sure that you think she'll be up to taking good care of the animal...if she's in a really bad way, as you said, maybe she won't have the time or energy to do all the things that are required to care for the hamster (and she could feel even more inadequate). They can be alot of work. I have hamsters, and they need their cages cleaned once a week, fresh water every other day, fresh food and veg each day....and it can be a big problem finding someone to take care of them if you have to go away.
I know you mean well, and maybe you know your friend will do a good job, but maybe you should consider doing something else nice for her, to cheer her up - going to the movies, visiting something, shopping for something that requires less commitment, etc.
Besides, hamsters are nocturnal and so are very active at night, and can make alot of noise and may prevent her from sleeping. Mine, for example, make ALOT of noise at night running on their wheels.
Anyway, just give it some serious thought first...I know too many cases where a surprise pet turned into a big problem and often the pet winds up given to an animal shelter.
I hope your friend feels better....

With the 10 + years I have raised hamsters...I found that the bigger the breed is the more friendlier they are to humans...and they are much more likely to sit in your hands and let you hold them....

Make sure she wants it first, or else be willing to take it home as you own. Try the Humane Society in your area, you can find it by going to Petfinder.com or looking in your phone book.
