people told me many teachers in USA aren't respected by the students, those particularly high school students are not disciplined at all, instead, they are sort of violent and disrepectful to the teachers, is that true?

most of the latino students (esp 1st and 2nd generation) are respectfull because that is what their parents taught for K-8

I have seen white and black students with attitude problems in K, 2nd, and 7th grade. but a majority or my students show me respect.

sometimes the parents do not respect teachers. sometimes the family isnt close or just gave up on disciplining the student.

certain kids only understand being yelled at or being spanked, whooped. It is a tough time and a tough generational issue.

but some of these kids have been stuck with rough schools, rough neighborhoods, and possibly some of the worst teachers that we have to offer in their earlier years in school.

They dont always recieve consistency, support, excitement, love of learning, and a feeling of safety in school that most other kids recieve in the suburbs or nicer areas of the US. Many areas have generally respectful students, but the class size keeps going up in the US. Issues arise in 40% of the schools in any large city. Most title 1 schools. Also kids maybe generally respectful, but they are forced to stay in school and not given a choice of going to a trade school early on in high school.

these major problems may be mostly likely to occur in extremely urban or some remote areas. It comes down to how much the nuclear family values education, and how the community can support the children.
it has gotten worse in recent years.
too much is focused on testing right now. tv, video games and apathy has become a part of the average student. All of this was only slightly true 8 years ago -more apathy than disrespect and seems to be worse now. I didnt get the impression that kids were that much more respectable acroos western Europe. Now with the pressure of math and writing tests-Science and social studies do not recieve enough time in the curriculum. that takes the fun out of the school day.

Friends of mine saw the same thing or worse in england . I didnt see anything half as bad as I saw here when i was in Michigan

that other girl is right- if you can build a good relationship with your kids........ you should be alright with 97% of your kids. one or two might give you headaches, but you can still build relationships with all of them.

It's true that in the US teachers aren't as respected as in other parts of the world. We have had subs come in who are from other countries and be appalled by the lack of respect.
On the flip side, when you are in your own room, making a relationship with those students, respect isn't a problem. We have teachers in my building who have not established classroom control and have a free-for-all in their rooms. So if you are prepared to be fair, firm and consistent you won't have any problems.
