Chlorine is one of the most commonly used disinfectants for water disinfection. Chlorine can be applied for the deactivation of most microorganisms and it is relatively cheap.

The chlorine acts as an "Antiseptic" killing the bacteria in the dirty water, "Components" won't change, but there will be no bacteria in the water alive (Micro-organism's) to hurt you. You could however get sick from any toxin's (Arsenic, Lead, Etc.) in the water, as "Chlorination" does NOT remove them, it will only kill "Bacteria".
